How Your Paycheck Is Calculated

Federal income tax — the same 2026 IRS brackets (10%-37%) and $16,100 single-filer standard deduction apply no matter which state you're in.

FICA — 6.2% Social Security (up to the $184,500 wage base) + 1.45% Medicare (+0.9% above $200,000), also identical nationwide.

State income tax — this is where paychecks diverge. Nine states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) charge $0. About a dozen more use a single flat rate. The rest use progressive brackets. A few states (CA, NY) also add small mandatory payroll deductions like SDI or Paid Family Leave, and several (OH, PA, NY, IN, KY, MD, MO, AL) have local/municipal income tax layers this calculator doesn't compute — each affected state page flags that explicitly rather than silently omitting it.
